Interview: Fairmail students

Some time ago we suddenly received a lot of entries from India. The weblinks directed us to the website of Fairmail, an organisation that makes greeting cards using pictures made by underpriviliged Indian teenagers. They help the youngsters to prepare for their future and earn money for their own housing and education. Participants in the Indian FairMail project all made the effort to make a Red Line Portrait. How cool is that! Unfortunately most of the entries where landscape and we saw room for improvement. Eager as we are, we challenged them to make a second entry. And they did! Below all ten (10!) of them tell about their self-portrait.

Aradhana

  1. My portrait shows that I am a happy person, I always make jokes to make my friends happy.
  2. Yes, it was helpful for me to improve my photo. Using the feedback I changed my composition, light and background.
  3. From this project I learned how to make a good portrait and how I can show expression through my eyes.

Akaash

  1. My-self portrait shows that I am a happy person, which is a big part of who I am.
  2. The feedback was helpful to improve my portrait. It helped me think creatively and I liked having another chance to create a self portrait.
  3. During this project it was challenging and fun to create a self-portrait. I learned that you can express oneself through photography. 
Anshu
  1. In my self-portrait with my hand in the foreground looking really big it portrays me as strong.
  2. I liked both photos I made, but it was useful to receive tips to make my photo better.
  3. I became inspired by participating in this project and seeing what other photographers created.

  1. Through my self-portrait it shows my interest in playing football.
  2. I like that I had a chance to redo my self-portrait with the feedback provided. I was able to work on my idea and create a more interesting picture.
  3. Through this project I learned that I can create a self-portrait to show the world about who I am.
Anil Kumar
  1. I think my self-portrait shows my inner child and that I am a happy guy.
  2. It was good to have feedback on changing the background and light. I think I made a better self-portrait by making these changes.
  3. I like expressing myself through portraiture because it gives me a chance to show my happiness and joy for life.
Ankita
  1. In the photo I look bigger than life because of the perspective. I did this because my dreams are also big.
  2. I liked the feedback we got on the photo, because in the second photo I became more aware of the background and the light. Making a better final photo.
  3. I learned that making a second photo after getting feedback can really improve the photo.
Kaushal
  1. I want to become a professional photographer, so in the self-portrait I show myself with my camera. I made the photograph with the use of a mirror, so you really see me taking the real photo and not just posing.
  2. I liked the fact that we had to make a second photograph. The first photo I made is not really a self-portrait, but in the second photo I could express much more about myself. The portrait really tells a story. Because of the criticism we got, I was able to develop the idea of my self-portrait more and I am happy with the final results.
  3. In this project I learned to make a self-portrait which tells a story. I also got many new ideas, because before I never found the idea of using a red line in a photograph or portrait.

Sandhya
  1. In my self-portrait I isolated my eyes, because I think the eyes of people can show everything about them. By watching someone´s eyes, you can learn a lot about their character.
  2. I liked making a second selfportrait. It made my photograph much better, because after the criticism we received, I made my photo by using interesting composition rules like framing, and my photo tells more of a story of who I am.
  3. I learned that making a good photograph is possible with any kind of prop. In this photograph I used just colored paper and a red line, but it still looks interesting.
Dhiraj
  1. In my self-portrait you can see I had headphone and in the background you can see the computer so can say I like listening to music and using the computer.
  2. I always like to make my self-portraits. My self-portraits are getting better and better so I like to make more.
  3. I made self-portraits before but in this project I really learned how to make a self-portrait in a more creative way.
Anil Rao
  1. In my 2nd photo I used very beautiful light and my hand which is symbolic. The beautiful light is the symbol of the beauty and the hand is the symbol of doing something so the meaning of the whole photo is to improve my inside beauty by doing good things because I am not beautiful from outside at all and physical beauty is temporary.
  2. By getting feedback I used different light, background and also I became more symbolic.
  3. From this project I learnt how to express something particular in pictures.
